A slightly dishevelled explanation, in a badly worded way.

It seems painfully comical that Labour is attempting to re-create themselves as the new champions of the ‘squeezed middle’, [must I mention the Labour sponsored financial squeeze we’re all trudging through? Thanks guys for the false sense of security by the way, no, no, really – THANKS (!)]

Be it new Labour leader Ed Milliband jumping on the bandwagon, despite his union-aided win over his more competent older brother, David (an attempt to finally get rid of the red-Ed image???) – or Alan Johnson’s politically calculated first policy, once in office, as the official champion of the ‘squeezed middle’ – it seems we’re, once again, politically fashionable!

What the hell is the squeezed middle?

Let’s get one thing clear – the middle classes are not necessarily the squeezed middle.

One of the best political descriptions of the ‘squeezed middle’ I read was from Mary Ann Sieghart:

“Median Gross Annual Earnings in 2009 were £20,801… These people are unlikely to say, airily: “I really don’t deserve child benefit”… Tax credits, introduced by Labour, have helped them enormously… American politicians understand this demographic. When they talk about the middle classes, these are the people they have in mind: people who work in not particularly rewarding white-collar jobs, whose budgets are tight and who value self-reliance. In Britain, our tendency to redefine ‘middle’ as ‘professional’ means that this vast chunk of the population is often ignored.”

So if you’re feeling squeezed because that 4×4 cost the earth, you don’t really qualify the squeeze. Professionals should not be just lumped together with the middle, and yes- there is a difference!

One of the most ridiculous things a politician can say to alienate middle England is by claiming to feel the economic pain… Cameron didn’t take a pay-cut; he merely took home a smaller pay-rise. Oh and yes, a personal photographer paid for by the tax payer??? REALLY??? So no Messrs. ConDems, none of you lot are just one of us!
